http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/Obsidian Yup. Most people wouldn't notice, not being too into obsidian-farming, or embarking somewhere that already have obsidian ( which automatically turns them green on stone screen, like with flux stones ). A bit annoying, but fix's just a hop around  :D

Yeah, always seems to be the case that an obsidian layer or four turn up on every site I run in Fort mode. Of course, since .31, that's .... three? Perhaps four? I had to get new hardware before I could run this version, so I took a break for some months.

You can turn on obsidian usage, you'll have to remove the bracket around MAX_EDGE after exiting the game, in the save raw for stones, specificlly the obsidian entry, open the game, mark it green, close the game and add the brackets back so you can make rock shortsword from it, and use it for other stone purposes.
Hooray, this worked! I'm rebuilding the test area with hatches and grates, and we'll see if the haulers stop melting themselves :)

So they were melting there hands in the magma rather than weapons being hot?  That's too bad.  Think how you could have weaponized that!  Red hot iron arrows lodging in goblin organs...

My plan was to drown them in magma and afterwards to collect the copper and silver.
However, I just realized that these materials are not magma-safe.
Will they be destroyed ?
Is there an easy way to remove the metal items only from cages ? I've had big trouble when I used the stocks screen, so I am looking for an alternative.

You'd have to use the stocks screen, I think.

Mass-designate cages, metal items, et al. for dumping and reclamation. In your stocks screen, remove the dump designation from all the gubble. Otherwise, though, I don't think you can; looking in the cage will only let you see the goblin, and its attributes, not its inventory.

The weapons were hot--I know this because I hadn't gotten around to making good helms for my soldiers, and so they greedily equipped some of the hot iron helms during early iterations, and melted their heads. (They were okay; it just sounded scary.)

I briefly entertained whether the hot items could be weaponized--but gloves on fire and some other emergencies in the fort distracted me. I didn't think of red hot bolts and arrows! Are they more dangerous than normal bolts and arrows? Can they be handled safely with steel gauntlets? There is possibly only one way to find out...

Helmets were probably full of magma, Dorfs were just to stupid to dump it out first.   :P
