Animals stuck in Cages, and Butchering
« on: April 24, 2008, 04:46:00 am »

I searched the forums and didn't find anything like this, so here's hoping it hasn't been brought up before.

Anyway, playing 38c on a mac (yeah, I know).

I let out a bunch of puppies from a cage and marked them butcherable.  Then my butcher went to sleep and I got tired of them wandering all over the place and put them back in the cage, thinking that my butcher would take them out when he wanted them.

As soon as he woke up I got hundreds of 'Could not find path' errors.  Then, when I tried to let them back out of the cage, it wouldn't let me - they're marked that they aren't supposed to be in there, but no one will take them out.  Also, I can't take out other - non-butcher marked animals.  Nor can I deconstruct the cage (it's a terrarium, btw).

Anyway, not sure what the problem is, exactly, but it seems like a bug to me.

Huh, that sounds like a mess.  So the cage interface breaks down completely, even for unrelated critters?  I wonder if it repeat in a simple controlled experiment, say, caging a butcher-designated animal and then setting a dwarf to be a butcher.

A save might be less useful in this case than a method of reproduction, but if you've got a save with some of the problems, I might be able to get some information.  I'll need the region folder in some kind of zip/rar/7z, and any new objects that were added to the raw folder.  If it's less than 20 megs, you can send it to toadyone@bay12games.com.  You can also try The Dwarf Fortress File Depot which has a special section for bugged saves.

An update:  I when I started playing a little while ago, even when I have an active butcher I'm not getting the pathfinding errors.  But I still can't modify the cage in any way.

Anyway, I'll try to send you a copy, but I can't guarantee anything - right now I'm living in Cairo and internet is very slow.  It took me something like an hour one time to upload a picture.
Edit: just  tried to take the animals out one last time before zipping the file.  There doesn't seem to be a problem anymore.  I guess I should have copied the file when I had the chance!  Sorry about that.
