Bee Keeping pollination bonus.
« on: June 12, 2011, 11:17:40 pm »

I think the vermin bee should have special tags added to increase crop yield or growth rate on nearby crops that come in contact with the vermin, as well as mutually benefitting the bees by producing more honey/royal jelly/splitting faster.

Yeah, but mushrooms don't need to be pollinated. Most of the above ground crops don't need to be either, I think (strawberries being the exception).

Non-flowering plant tags would solve this issue but I believe it may be better for gameplay value to have all plants able to be pollinated, since it's no more realistic to expect bumblebees to turn into honey bees or a bar of soap to hold up a fortress, bees being able to pollinate plants that reproduce via spore would be no exception to the lack of realism.

And it may add interesting results or stupid dwarven tricks to try getting hives to pollinate underground crops, like placing one above a field and then channelling out the floor so the vermin goes down to the lower z-level (bees do indeed traverse z-levels).

I think it could be an interesting idea, and a sorely needed bonus for keeping bees around. As it is, they don't provide much for a fort.

Mushrooms doesn't have pollen. They have spores, and it's quite a bit different from flower pollen, even while it shares the same basic function.

And there are enough honey bees on the map for outside pollinisation.

Subterranean crops, however, which are mostly fungi, COULD have the equivalent of pollinisators, but it would be better to make another cavern-dwelling vermin the inner pollinisators.

I like this idea! :) A skilled Beekeeper could work in synergy with a skilled Planter to pollinate and boost crop yield.

Also, mushrooms do not have pollen, but some of them DO rely on insects to help spread their spores.

There is a kind of fungus that uses ant to get it's spores around by basically mind controlling it and then growing out of the ant's head.
