Can't get my archers to train (solved)
« on: June 23, 2011, 01:57:19 pm »

I have made a squad of them, I have given them a uniform consisting of iron buckers and crossbows, and I have assigned ammunition - 50 of any type, and set that to be used in training. There are plenty of bolts available.

I have made several archery targets in a room, made an archery range from one of them, set the shooting direction and set the right squad to train there.

They have been set to training in the scheduler (I know this works because I've done the same with a melee squad and they train just fine.)

If I give them a regular barracks, they'll train wrestling/hammering there.

Yet I can't get them to train with their crossbows! They're all listed as "Soldier (cannot follow order)", some have ammo in their quivers, some don't.

If anyone has any idea whatsoever, I'd be very grateful. I've been trying to get this to work for a long time.

Do you have any hunters? Deallocate their ammo if you don't. Are each archery range in separate halls? There used to be, and most probably still are, bugs with overlapping archery ranges.

And did you actually set JUST 50? The setting is per-squad, which means that some of your dwarves aren't having many of them ( each quivers can hold 25 bolts, IIRC, so that's... Two?) I usually set mine at double the default, at 500, or more if it's only crossbowing squad.

Oh, I thought it was per dwarf. I made it a lot higher =P

That, combined with making an archery range from every single target instead of just from one, seems to have fixed it! Thanks!
