Living without farms?
« on: June 22, 2011, 12:59:53 pm »

i found perfect embark for me, except my world doesnt have caverns(no underground plants) and the embark is rosky wasteland.
How on earth can i feed my population? Should i embark with ton of dogs and cats and drink only water? plus buy anything i can from caravans?
This embark has a stream and a volcano and its almost flat.

EDIT: never mind. Luckily this embark has some soil.

Wet the surface ( unless it's mountain or ocean biome ), gather plant everywhere, if there're some, make the farm on muddied surface, hope human or elf caravans brings seeds. And a lot of barrelful of boozes, wood, and plants. Having animals helps with the eating aspect, for sure.

Without the ability to grow plants, you're going to be in a bad situation when it comes to booze-making.  You can't distill elk birds and dralthas.  If you've got no non-mountain soil, then it'll be underground farming only.

Hunting can net a lot of food, and fishing if you have water on the surface. Can the dwarven civs make booze without underground crops? If not, this is going to be very, very close. Buy all the food and alcohol you can from the caravans, and prepare to muddy some above-ground land when you finally get some seeds.

I play a lot of no-cavern worlds - water and beast of burden meat for you plus whatever your hunters and fishers can collect.

At least till you see humans and elves, and can buy seeds off them.

If you have soil.  Never tried to grow outdoor crops on muddied outdoor rock.  It might work.

I think you can grow outside crops on mountain biomes. Any tile that gets exposed to sunlight will eternally be considered Outside. So you could make a 1 z-level-deep channel on the surface, then roof it over and it shouldnt freeze since its not in contact with the ourside air. Then again Ive never tried thisso I could be talking out of my ass for allI know.

I'll test this tonight with a no cavern world and see if I can grow aboveground crops on muddy rock.

Rocky wasteland despite its name, does have patches of soil. You can grow aboveground crops on it once you get some above ground seeds, and you don't even need to irrigate. You can possibly even find some shrubs to harvest if you're lucky.
