New here...
« on: July 28, 2011, 06:08:42 pm »

Hey hey guys :)

I'd heard about DF some time ago (heard it was one of minecraft's influences), and been poking around, but kinda to lazy to start.

Recently, though, a good friend of mine told me he'd started playing me and urged me in, so I could understand the game and explain WTF it is, and HTF you play it o_O

So, my first stump was the version. The main pagehttp://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/ has SDL and Legacy options. Which one should I DL?

(I do wanna point out that I'd love to play the heavy ASCII stuff, as crude and hardcore as it gets. But I'd also like to play the most recent version. Which one, then?)

Thanks in advance,

Silly

(btw, I did search the wiki about the versions and couldn't figure out the legacy/sdl thing)

get sdl.  legacy implies "outdated".

have fun, and remember that wiki, it is your best friend.

0.31.25, SDL.

You'll probably also want to pick up Dwarf Therapist, as managing dwarven labor through the default interface quickly becomes an exercise in carpal tunnel syndrome.

I'd recommend getting the Lazy Newb Pack.  It's got the latest version of DF, plus a bunch of tilesets - that you don't have to use - and utilities that can be useful.

Also, I'd recommend checking out the DF2010 Little Questions Thread, which is full of quick questions like this you can ask:  http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=52208.13860
