Armor Duplicates

Is there any real advantage to having x3 Mailshirts/Cloaks/Dresses/Robes over having just 1 of the specific item? The wiki seems to take it as a given that "more=better" but doesn't explain why.

Every time a creature is attacked, its armor over the body part that is being attacked is checked for deflection. More armor means more chances to deflect an attack, or at least dampen it from an edged attack to a blunt one. At least, that's the idea, but it's difficult to test for certain whether multiple identical armor pieces helps or not. Then again, as your soldiers' Armor User skill improves, the penalties for wearing multiple armor suits, such as slower movement due to encumbrance, decreases towards 0, so a decent soldier won't have any problems.

I don't know if there're real advantage, I haven't tested it in arena mode, but I like giving my dwarves multiple clothings bits, because of the wear, at least if one of the parts are breaking down, they will have another on top of it  :D

I would imagine it'd help somewhat, since attacks does have to go through layers first, the question of there being noticable advantage, I have no idea about.

Lets say an attack has a 50% chance to get through a breastplate. Then it has an 80% chance to get through a mail shirt. That would be a 40% chance that the attack would injure the target. Now imagine if you had 3 mail shirts, it would be 50% 80%X3, or 25.6% chance.

Don't take the exact numbers I used as the gospel. I just pulled them out of thin air.
