How do i do this? Do they automatically do this or do i have to tell them to stand there?

Life gives you lemons, you make orange juice, and sit back and watch everyone try and figure out how you did it.

You have to make sure they're right next to it, unless they're elite crossbowiers, which means they can shoot through fortification at distance.

Also make sure they have no path to the targets, or that the existing path is very very long. Otherwise they'll just go round the corner and bash away with their crossbows.

Have them guard a 1 tile wide burrow next to your fortifications.

It's a bit complicated indeed.

You need to assign them to a specifically-created alert, that includes a patrol OR defend burrow order, where the burrow you defined is right next to the fortification.
This way they will not run to the enemies even if they can path to them.

Please bear in mind that if you use a burrow, they will no reload when they run out of bolts. But if instead than "defend burrow" you specify a patrol, with one waypoint next to the fortifications and another one next to an ammo stockpile, they will.

Naked dwarves remove the need to produce more clothing, which means more of your pig tails can be brewed into booze.
I think this is less a problem and more an expression of dwarven priorities.

I have them stationed in a small patrol route inside the fortifications, whence the doors are locked after they arrive. No pathing possible.

I tend to limit their mobility--e.g.  a 2 tile wide elevated walkway framed on either side by fortifications seems to work.  Then again I make sure they are pretty good before I send them out there, or it's elite bowgoblin training time.
