My inventory screen has shown me to have met the criteria for a barony for three years now, so I am baffled why I haven't been offered the opportunity to make a baron.

I've got his rooms ready.  Picked out a few candidates who like things I have on my map...  Still nothing.

I had my first ambush and siege in the past three seasons, and my fort is four years old.  Over 100 dwarfs, and only 3 deaths (a river thaw drowning, a troll from a cavern breach, and the guy who spotted the ambush), so I can't imagine I have a bad reputation.

Is there a random factor to qualifying for barony?

once you meet the requirements, you have to let the liaison from the mountain homes talk to your mayor AFTER the caravan has left, or you wont get the baron message, easiest way to do that is throw your mayor in his room using burrows(with a food and drink stockpile) and forbid the door till the caravan goes away.

this isnt foolproof, and when i tried it, i screwed it up and still got the baron thing, but dont know why, so the baron agreement can be made even if the caravan is still there, it just dosent always happen.

I believe that's been fixed, or at least I've never had issues in .18 getting the barony offer and promoted.

I'll give holding off on the liaison meeting until the caravan has left a try.  It may be grasping at straws, but I don't know what else I can do

Y'know.. Every time I got a barony... My fort went down immediately after on account of a siege, tantrum spiral, or unforeseen food and/or liquid scarcity. Be careful with what you wish.

Normally, the caravan and liaison both need to safely exit the map (without having been robbed, if you're the sort to use the dump trick) at least one time while you have the requirements. Then the next time they arrive, you'll receive the offer; if you don't receive the offer the second time around, make a fairly large offering and then buy a lot of stuff at a really big loss and wait till next year. It will happen eventually.
