Cages
« on: June 18, 2011, 08:49:40 am »

So, I just got an elf caravan. After kicking the crap out of them and stealing their stuff, I discovered among the haul several cages - a moose, a wolf, and a badger. What exactly can I do with these?

Also, my fortress is getting high in population (52) and I have been unable to find any iron. What do I do - just make my weapons out of copper and start training a militia, keep digging, or use the wooden weapons that I got from the elves?

I find that wooden weapons suck, unless your the one getting hit by them. You can just outfit them in copper, until you get to iron/goblinite.

As for the cages, assign the things in them to a pen/pit.

you can breed the critters, if you get breeding pairs eventually, and change PET_EXOTIC to PET in the save raw. Wooden weapons are worse than copper things, at least you can bash things pretty hard with copper.

do not bother with copper edge weapons, byu iron, bronze or steel items from caravans, melt them and make real weapons. You don't need that much crap to make 10 weapo0ns. Copper armour, on the other hand, is a viable option until you dig deeper and find anything better.

The animals in the cages are tame.

Think of the wolf as a meaner war dog and use it as an entrance guard on a rope.

The badger might be usable the same way - or put in a social hall as an exhibit.

The moose is a grazer and would have to be assigned pasture space - and a bit of it since they eat a lot of grass.

And if you're stuck with copper (and silver I assume as well - tetrahedrite?) the goblins might be stuck as well.  So the goblinite will be copper and some silver as well.  That means any bronze and steel weapons you trade for (or manage to make) will be fairly effective.  And try to get tin so that you can make more bronze.

Odd. I have always seen iron goblinite (In adventures). I expected it was all they wear.

I am stuck with silver and copper and my goblins are too.
All my steel comes from trading ALL iron items I found and melting it down. It turned out quite well, I have now 30 full sets of steel plate.

Naked dwarves remove the need to produce more clothing, which means more of your pig tails can be brewed into booze.
I think this is less a problem and more an expression of dwarven priorities.
