Scaring Dwarves to stay indoors.
« on: June 19, 2011, 10:37:05 pm »

So I had the recent experience of driving off an ambush, then getting lots of job cancellation alerts because there was a goblin about.  After half a year of not finding the guy, I eventually located him trapped in a dried-up pond-bed.

Now, I also have this problem where all my dwarves come wandering outside during ambushes at the like, only to get picked off.  I'd prefer to leave the doors open and have the gobbos get killed on my traps, but noo... people keep walking outside.  Then instead of running to safety, they lead the goblins on a merry chase that ends in them getting killed while everyone else keeps wandering outside.

So to combine the two, is it possible for me to use some sort of... bridge over goblin-pit to keep people inside?  If so, how would I hide the goblin when my people are supposed to go out and cut down trees, whatever?

Is there an easy way to do this?  I was thinking of putting a bridge that can close over (but not on) the goblins in the pit, but I don't know if that would hide them well enough.

Use burrows to make your dwarves stay inside, although if they see a goblin they'll run around like idiots.

A retracting bridge will close over a pit.

Channel all the pool/ponds out, and any non-covered water holes ( it'll leave a ramp ) so they never get trapped there again, learnt the hard way over and over!

You don't have a meeting zone designated? My dwarves rarely ever go out to wander around, and I always uses d>b>f to forbid everything around outside, unless I'm VERY certain it's clear out there.

You'll have to build a wall around the area you want to keep 'inside' your fort, so your civvies won't get terrified off when they have to go out and work there  :D

Well, normally I just use mass-forbids and stuff to keep people from getting interested in the outside while under attack but this time I'm on a very steep volcano, so I really can't see the outside ground well enough to forbid things.

Thus the interest in an alternate system.

I've been pondering the auto-forbid-on-death stuff again, but then that leaves me with ghosts running around and bodies... somewhere.  (Going through the notifications for struck-down alerts is... a pain.)

Maybe it's time to learn the Burrows stuff...

You can use stock screen to find bodies, or unforbid them when it's safe, same for ammo and whatever else you're interested in. You might want to look for body pieces also ( I forget what category it's in on that screen ). I makes a habit of using stock screen to manage things with auto-forbid on since it's too much a pain otherwise, even on flat embarks.

I used to forbid and claim and forbid untill last week when I finally bit the bullet and figured out the burrow system.

Do it now.

All I do now is change civ alert level to 'danger' which has burrow 'inside' associated and back.
Combined with an early warning system of animal watch towers, and my last-chance-entry tunnel, I've hardly lost a dwarf since (well, except from immigrants).
