You aren't proper dwarves. Proper fortresses are built out of proper stone, proper stone isn't colorful. Proper fortresses aren't colorful. Q.E.D.

Poor guy, seems his fortress ran out of alcohol a while ago. :(

I'd agree on the whole, but fortresses should always have some splash of colour, whether that's red blood, green gems, or blue cobaltite. Not to mention the gold statues, glass tables, and gem-encrusted masterpieces. Hell, a proper fortress ought to be fairly bright.

No problems with some gold statues (on the contrary). Yet I can't imagine a fortress with green, pink or whatever walls...

When have the dwarven tunnels ever been depicted dark?  They're always alive with industry and song and drink and more drink!  Flickering torch light cascading over brilliant smoothed stone walls, cutting into the side of the mountain and exposing its colorful layers and minerals.  Large pillars with colorful cornerstones, towering spires with highlights of green and blue, deep pits that dive into the reds and purples.  Tasteful color will only accentuate the parts of a fortress you wish to draw attention to.

Real-life microcline actually comes in a variety of shades, none of which even remotely resemble the colour it's represented by in-game. I looked it up on Wikipedia once and I've been quarrying it for masonry and crafting ever since.

I think Toady's confusing interface better simulates the experience of a bunch of disorganised drunken dwarves running a fort.

Microcline and orthoclase both produce gem-quality material occaisionally.

And although picture jasper has no real use or value in-game, it's pretty cool stuff.

A proper LSD-fort would be build entirely out of gem windows.

Or would that be Epilepsy Fortress?

I concur!

And I was considering making low-value gemstone versions of many cluster or layer stones, appearing as individual units within the clusters.
