Moody smiths don't handle irregular forges well
« on: April 19, 2008, 12:31:00 am »

One of my smiths decided to go moody while I was filling a magma cistern; this activity was diverting magma from the forge area. I decided to stop the filling while he got his mood done, but because of the setup of the forges, while the magma flowed in, they'd rapidly go into and out of service. He claimed a forge while it was "on", then went to get materials...and immediately went mad when the forge blinked off again.

Now, this was just a migrant, so I'm mainly annoyed at the loss of a chance at a legendary blacksmith and what probably would have been an iron hatch cover or something...but it's still weird behavior. I'm guessing that a moody dwarf goes insane if his workspace is removed, while he should, more realistically, just wait for a new one to become available. Possibly he should go mad if he'd actually started construction of the artifact when the workshop goes off, but this? This is just lame. :\

I'm not sure if it is a bug, you figure that this dwarf has sudden inspiration to make his life's work gets materials gets his workshop then suddenly the fates come and make it unusable, his half crafted work is now just a quickly solidifying mess. And considering dwarves can flip into a rage over being drafted this is not that far out

Yes, but he hadn't even started the work in question. He was literally three steps away from the forge on his trip to get the first ingredient when it blinked off and he went insane. As I said, in the event that the workspace becomes unusable once he's started, sure, I can see how that would be a problem. But he hadn't got started yet.

Anyway, since I consider this a bug, I went ahead and restored from a save (fortunately he got moody right before the season change), and it's not an iron hatch. It's an iron bucket.

Normal behavior.

When a dwarf goes moody, if ANYTHING happens to their workshop, they go mad.

"I can't use this work surface! I must kill everyone! HAAAAAAHAAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

This is actually a known bug. If a magma forge loses its magma any jobs in it are canceled and any moods attached to it fail. However moody dwarves seem to have a preference for none magma workshops so either wait until the magma is full or have a spare none magma one around to avoid this from happening.
