Looking for able-keyboarded coders...
« on: June 12, 2011, 02:25:37 pm »

While I do think this might be a lost cause, I guess it can't hurt posting a thread.

The point is, me and a few other people from the simtropolis community are considering starting a project to make an open source (?) clone of simcity 4 (with improvements included obviously). The problem is, while we do I have a couple of people that know the innards of simcity's simulation like the palm of their hands (so we could in theory reconstruct a game much similar to it), we don't have anyone capable of coding. And without even a simple alpha release trying to attract coders to help on the project is unfeasible.

Given how we seem to have a lot of people who know how to code here at bay12 I guess it can't hurt to ring around asking if anybody is interested.

So yeah, if anybody is interested do post here and/or contact me  :o

Language would ideally be either C# or C++

I really want that one as a "when". I want "grubs", and "virgin woman" to turn into a dragon. and monkey children to suddenly sprout wings. And I want the Dwarven Mutant Academy to only gain their powers upon reaching puberty. I also have a whole host of odd creatures that only make sense if I divide them into children and adults.

Also, tadpoles.

Depending on when this project gets started, I might be interested if its c++, but at the moment I am quite busy with my current project.
Also, like it was stated in the other threat, you should definitely try to get at least a small team going, but realize that odds are, the people you will find wont be dedicated enough or quickly lose interest. See it a lot with projects here.

But, best of luck, Ill be keeping an eye on this. :)

Yes. I miss the Simtropolis forums, I should visit some time. But I do remember a few years back some simtropolis members tried a similar thing, called Urbs Urbis (later renamed to Metropolis, I believe). Do you know what ever happened to that project? Last I recall they were trying for a spot in Google Summer of Code, but that was a few years ago.

I don't yet have the technical ability to handle or program a large codebase, so you will definitely need someone experienced to act as a project manager who can set up repositories, a bug tracker, etc... IMO it's much more important to be organized than it is to actually be good at coding for a large project like this. I'm proficient in Java (used to use C++ a lot, but now my skill in it is quite rusty, and I have touched C# every now and then but I've never done anything really involved using it) and I'm starting to learn OpenGL (though nowhere close to having enough skill to write something like the SimCity 4 graphics engine; from what I remember reading about it there are a number of custom hardware routines that allow SimCity 4 to render the humongous poly-counts on screen without choking and dying), so I guess I could act as a tester/debugger.

Yeah, the simcity comminuty has a history of trying to make a clone and failing epicly at it, although I recall usually it involved attempts at a full 3d engine (which is suicide given the scale of the game), our plan is a little less ambitious on this scope (we'll keep the trimetric projection that sc4 uses) but the game's engine still is a behemoth to code.

Actually, nevermind. I have my own stuff to program, plus I never played the game.

That is sooo... motivating, on your part  :P
Joke apart, good luck on your projects! :)

I am pretty fluent in c++, I use it mostly to help with classes, but not so much at graphic api's. (I have used openGL/SDL for some visualisation, but I am no master at it.)

I would like to hear some more about your project.

It looks interesting, though completing even a fraction of your goal would be a massive hurdle...

Yeah, the whole thing would be simply unfeasible to do with a single coder. Our idea is to start small and get a working proof of concept alpha out, then work out implementing all the mechanics and such.
