Pull the lever.  You know you want to.

Well, Dig your way out and install door. Anyway, you might want to access the floodgate to install a mecanism...

What I wonder : what would happen if he wanted to get a lunch while digging, and being separated from the whole colony ?

I think the answer is he'd just be fixated on eating and would complain he can't reach it until eternity. Unless digging is treated as a special case I've noticed hungry/thirsty dwarves or basically any dwarf that's fixated on a particular task refuses to do anything else.

This was my first thought, but I just started this fortress, and right now I only have my seven starter dwarves plus the metalsmith and his friend.  I guess there's nothing for it but to dig out.  I really hate to ruin my pretty floodgate setup, though.

Just use [t] and remove the right floodgate, and install it one space further right (flush with the farm wall).

How about making a second lever connected only to the right floodgate, and taking it apart when your miner is free?  Or failing that, pull the lever, designate part of the wall in the farming room, and pull the lever again once he's stumbled out of his trap (assuming underwater dwarves have any other job than "wander aimlessly").

If I do this, the same thing might happen again (although hopefully it wouldn't; before this I had thought dwarves were smart enough not to do this, hence the bug report).  Incidentally, it's because of cases where I need to remove and reinstall the floodgate that I leave that space, but in the past I've only trapped dwarves back there by getting too hasty and constructing the second floodgate while the mechanic is still working on the first.

Building a second lever is a good idea, but I really wanted to get this farm done as soon as possible, since spring comes in about ten days.

And, if you look at that screenshot, he is still smiling.

That's because he knows I won't pull that lever.  Smug bastard.

That case is fairly stark, but a number of others would involve a lot of thinking to predict the disconnected paths and so on, and it isn't as exactly feasible, although maybe it would work...  somewhat.  At the same time, maybe there could be a preferred build direction or something as a quicker fix, though that would be more cumbersome interface-wise.

How about whoever built the floodgate can pass thru it for x seconds after it's built?

It could be passable to all for x seconds, I suppose, but then pets or idlers might wander in there.

The preferred build direction should be the direction the worker enters the construction site from.

That sounds reasonable.  It would take a little work to get them to think about it properly, but it's probably the best way to do it.
