I built a bizarre diagonal set of passageways with little diagonal niches for statues, intended to be the most compact assortment of engravings+statues ever.

Turns out you can't build a statue on a square that's only accessible diagonally!  Whyfor not?  And, while I'm sure there's a valid reason for not allowing that, doors have their own problems.  Statues TELL you that they can't go there, and won't let you try to put them there.  Doors on the other hand will let you try to place them in an inaccessible location like a little cornerous niche, and won't say it's not allowed until a dwarf starts trying to build it.

Dwarves cannot currently build certain things on a diagonal.

As far as I recall, it is possible to place doors on diagonals, but you have to remove junk, such as rock, away first.
you an do that by dumping, make a dump area i>g then designate the rubble to be dumped.
No idea if clearing the area works for statues too, I never made much statues, i guess you have to try it

It's the door inconsistency that's the real bug here...

Also, you can't build walls diagonally BUT you can build floors this way.

It always bugged me - I had to build a lot of unnecessary floors and then remove them to build square-shaped rooms in the upper levels.
