I started in a haunted area and i never expected this to happen.

Seconds after starting on the beach my dwarfs were pounded by waves and had to quickly carry the food upland.

Are there actually waves in Dwarf fortress?

it looked amazing with my high FPS iv never seen anything like it in DF.

Yes, if you embark right on the coast you will get waves coming up onto the beach.

It appears Mountainhomes supplied you with a boat instead of wagon. Wagons are too rare nowadays, not even traders have them.

Yea oceans have waves and tides n such. Be careful how close you dig to the shore lest your entrance get flooded.

That's a basic description of it from the wiki. Not much to waves and tide besides extra considerations about digging.

While it may look great with your FPS...it's worth remembering that ocean embarks are more demanding due to waves.

Not to mention what a pain in the ass it is if your dorfs have to walk across the beach to get things done. Prepare for thousands of job cancellations because waves break pathfinding.

Visually, ocean waves are definitely one of the more impressive effects in DF. Even in ASCII, there's something soothing about watching waves wash up and break across the base of your fort.

And then I embarked next to a haunted ocean, and the fort was overrun within the first year by.. <shudder> skeletal carp. So not all that soothing, really.. more like traumatizing, I haven't embarked near an ocean since.
