I actually do think gaming is in a better spot then 5 years ago. Simply because - in my opinion - there's a way more diverse line-up up and coming.

Companies think that better graphics mean better games but that’s not necessarily true.

This statment is made even worse if you know that its not shiny realistic graphics that make the game. Its more the asthetics. You can have have the best graphics in the world and the game can still look like shit. Or last least polished shit. I mean that A game can have horrible graphics but still look great if you put those limited graphics to good use.

And I am disspointed that the market seems dominiated by FPSes. I really want new kinds of games, but it seems that the majority wants FPSes, so we will get plenty of FPSes.

Concerning asthetics I agree, several of my favorite games have "horrible graphics" but wondrful astetics , Disgaea,TWEWY,and several other games. I have nothing against "next-gen graphics" but I would apreciate it people focus on the meat of the game and not the packaging.

I think the whole Indie trend that we've been enjoying has really been bringing a lot of life to gaming lately.  I'll put myself in the "Gaming is better now" category. 

I think there are definitely some area's where gaming isn't doing so well though.  Console gaming really feels like its stagnating to me, which is a shame since I actually quite liked console games.  I can think of probably at least 25 games I loved for the PS2, but only about 3 or 4 for the PS3.  (although there have been a few pretty fun ones downloadable on the PSN).

I think once the big companies start to realize that you don't need amazing 3d realistic expensive graphics to make a good game, gaming will get even better.

Sure, the big name companies are churning out the same crap (its not so much bad as it is almost exactly the same as all the other crap out there) they always do but its a good time to be an indie gamer. Dwarf Fortress, Terraria, world of tanks, etc. A lot of different games are coming out from tiny operators.

The only problem is that a lot of "good old games" are getting to the point where they just don't run at all on a modern OS.

Alternately, running better than they ever did, in the case of "emulators" like Dosbox.

Though I know what you mean. I had some trouble playing Jagged Alliance 2 (which I got in a super duper deal) in Windows 7. After that it was an amazing game and I cannot wait til JA3.

The biggest hindrance to modern gaming I see right now is how much pressure alot of game are under to "market now, patch later" and it is a shame because I think the best games need an environment where they have time to put neat things in.
