Font for a rougelike
« on: June 02, 2011, 02:47:37 pm »

I am starting to make a rouge like in SDL and I require a bitmap font set.  I want one of these because, if in the future, this turns into something decent I want it to be graphic modifiable.

My question:  Are there any fonts I can legally convert and distribute in my game?  Which font does dwarf fortress use?

Well, at the very least these ones should be good:  http://openfontlibrary.org/fonts

Now if anyone knew a way to convert these files to .bmp or .png that would be great.

Load font into GIMP.

Create Image.

Type the character set.

Save image.

Crop out each individual character. Save as .jpg.

Or keep it as a sheet if you have something that can read it.

One alternative, a font I started making long ago (the only characters I didn't make were the two dwarf faces)

I don't mind if anyone uses it, though it isn't necessarily anywhere near the greatest font ever.

Downloaded, because it was pretty. :D

To solve the pixelation problem: don't save it as a .jpg. Jpegs use some kind of weird antialiasing filter that screws up low-resolution images, like fonts or most game sprites. Save it as a .bmp, or a .png if you're feeling fancy.

Courier New, it's used in Linux terminals and whatnot, and you should already have it.

Also, it's roguelike, not rougelike.

Yeah, sorry. I said .jpg out of habit. Use another file format that doesn't crappify it.

Thanks for the help I think I'll use the one supplied here already by the upper poster, much better than I could ever hope to do.

http://www.angelcode.com/products/bmfont/

This tool turns any font into a bmp or png and outputs the character information into a data file (text, xml, binary). Takes a bit of effort to read the information and adjust the letters to tiles, as opposed to just square letters in a texture, but I always found it very useful.

Always make sure you have a proper license or use completely free fonts. They're not that easy to find.
