Overdecorating leads to loss of masterwork decoration
« on: January 19, 2007, 02:29:00 pm »

I just had a somewhat unpleasant experience of having a legendary bonecrafter destory his own masterwork.

Since there is no option yet to have workers haul their own products, this craftsdwarf is set to spend a good portion of his time making skull totems and then encrusting nearby items (normally those same totems) with bone.  Unfortunately, it appears there is a limit of the decoration any given item can bear.

I just received two messages in rapid succession:

code:

Ducim érithfeb has created a masterpiece!
A masterwork of Ducim érithfeb has been lost!

Looking at the horse skull totem presently at the top of his shop's inventory, it appears to have 10 separate decoration on it, which I take to be the limit.

It would be nice if a craftsdwarf of such skill were intelligent enough to realize that an object had been decorated as much as possible and simply chose something a little less ostentacious to place his next decoration upon.  Or at least make it so it doesn't destory a masterwork decoration, making a dwarf miserable.

Everyone legendary I've ever had go miserable from defacement has wound up dead. -_-  This is certainly the first time it'll be a true suicide, though.

"My God!  It's so... tacky.  I made something TACKY.  I WANT TO DIE!"

The intruder arose, casting off its black cloak.  "Behold, stunted jesters!  It is I, Scuro!"  A jagged scar marked the goblin's face from eye to chin, his greasy mane gray and wild, and about his neck was the broken silver amulet, strapped together by a leather band.

There isn't a cap of 10 on improvements.  That might be the effective limit on an artifact, but there's nothing coded that stops more than 10 improvements.  It doesn't like to add the same exact type of material again, but I don't know if that has anything to do with it.  They're supposed to just pass over the item in those cases.  Anything else like this going on?  Saves?

I hope this gets fixed; I intend to one day possess a masterpiece steel sword decorated with every type of bone in the game.

Whoops.  Dang.  I presumed that their was a cap and didn't keep a save near the time.  The most recent one was several months prior, but the totem is still lying around in the shop.

Sad thing is, with the way hauling is always backed up, it could have been any of a dozen totems lying around in the workshop.  I wish I could add a simple order to a workshop "clear clutter".  Just makes whoever works the workshop move everything into bins, stockpiles, or at least empty nearby squares if no better option presents itself, before continuing.  I'd put it on repeat in the coin-making magma forges.

There was a full siege between the creation of this save and the defacement, so I doubt I'll be able to reproduce the bug from that, but I'll keep decorating in the current game and see if it happens again.
