Underground trees.
« on: November 09, 2007, 02:43:00 pm »

A mango tree grew in a stream, blocking my water supply. water was at least 3 high, and normally around 5-6. the situation was inside, light, above ground. (while actually it was underground, and I build a floor above it, perhaps the diome descended).

The stream was supported by the river, and I dug the stream myself. but in the end the stream was blocked by the strange tree growing in the stream.

So, it wasn't a stream but really a channel. Perhaps you channeled a sapling at the exact moment it became a tree?

Sounds strange. A pic would be cool.  :)

A picture... right, lets see how to do that. Might take a while. And then you guys see my idiotic actions, my silly attempts to stop a river from flooding a lot, and all the choas it caused. So the tree actually came very welcome       :). But I guess it won't for everyone. Ah well.. Here it is:

Aboveground:

Underground:

The tree is surrounded by the floodgates.

Hope this clarifies it a bit.

Edit: All the floors are above channel tiles I dug. And the tree grew there when the floors above where already in place.

That isn't the issue, the issue is that a tree grows in a stream that shouldn't grow there. It's a bug. Im not bothered by it, but it remains a bug.

"floors" don't change the tiles beneath them back to subterranean. That's really the core issue. The tree is a result of that. All the tiles covered by "floors" around are probably "above ground" too. I know all of my covered over areas are above ground. Lakes I've drained, etc. I haven't had any problems with trees though...

The sapling probably sprouted in the short time frame between digging the channel and that tile filling to 7/7 water. If it is a mangrove tree, they can survive in water (I've seen other submerged saplings die). If it is a mango tree, which I haven't noticed in the game yet, then I would think it would have died, and is buggy. I suspect the former, however, and it is working as intended.

It's a mango tree. And the channel ran for a long time (don't know, think almost a year) And the floor above the channel was placed very soon after I dug the channel.

;)).

I had a deciduous tree (Maple I think) grow in a channel in version 33f the other day.

I dug the channel, set up a pump.  The channel filled and after awhile a tree sprouted and blocked the channel.  I sent a woodcutter in there to chop it down and he drowned!

yes.. happened to me before too.  maybe somehow the seed of the top ground cover got inherited by the channel floor?

Anyway, the perm solution around this is to smooth/build the floor.

I had the same happen, forget what kind of trees, didn't really care.  I floored my whole channel.

I think it would be great if you could have an underground tree.   I have no magma on my map and Id love the ability to have a source of wood for fuel that didn't require my dwaves to go outside.

You could always turn some "outside" into "inside." About half me current fort was considered outside till I built a plethra of walls, ceilings, and other things. Not the forts huge, and barely any of it was dug into the mtn. And building all those floors solved my spare rock problem.

Oh yeah, and it looks cool.

I do wonder how he managed to break his own back though.

This is why I build my outdoors aqueducts with raising bridge-walls* and disable-able river pumps. If a tree grows, I stop the pumps, lower the bridge-walls, and the water in the aqueduct flows out onto the surrounding tiles.

* = A raising bridge, used as a wall. Does not provide support or floors on the above tile or anything, but uses many less stones and can be toggled between being a wall and not being one.
