Mining the blue stuff.
« on: May 31, 2011, 09:35:24 pm »

Ok, so i've hit the blue stuff in the magma sea. However it's surrounded on all sides by magma, and it's too thin to burrow down it safely. How can I mine this deposit short of something incredibly dorfy like draining the magma sea?

That's a tough problem.  Maybe the adamantite vein just isn't wide enough to tolerate miners.  Now as for your remark about dwarfyness.  Think of it as an opportunity, as likely to flood the fortress with magma as not, but a valuable chance to pull of something great.

The first layer can be dealt with by pouring buckets water on it from two levels above to turn the magma around the adamantine into a protective obsidian layer. After that, I'm not sure.

I had the dwarfy idea that because i am on a permafrozen ocean, I could dig out a cistern, make a pumpstack from magma level to the surface, melt a load of ice, and use that to cast a workable area around the candy.

Do it. Do it now.

Or find a way to empty or move/displace the offending portion of the magma sea. Your call.

The blue stuff vein gets wider as it goes down. dropping water around the vein should work for the first layer, the layers down should be managably large to dig out a little room within them.

I never thought about just running a bucket-brigade from a platform above it. Would that work?

I suppose I could try and drain it using the map edge fortification bug(?) but that'll cause massive amounts of lag and thinking about my overly complicated cistern assembly, the fact that it's the magma sea would cause endless 'a section of the cavern has collapsed' spam.

Buckets don't drop enough water to form obsidian.

Just make sure to mine out as much of it as possible, especially the middle.

Also, don't dig any stairs or ramps down from the bluestuff layer level with the lowest level of the magma sea, by rule of thumb.

You can't even throw up a wall or floor fast enough to stop the tidal-wave of fun from wrecking your entire fortress.

But you could run a bucket brigade onto a bridge, up to a reasonable depth, and then open the bridge to the magma. Just a suggestion.

The water needs to fall through one or more levels of empty space. I'll grab a screenshot later, it's kind of late right now.

If you need to go deeper down the spire, you could create a sort of funnel out of obsidian. eg 3 tiles wide for the top layer, channel out the intter 2 tiles, 2 tile layer below that and so on

I've done this successfully before, the obsidian on the lower level is attached to the floor on the level above, so it doesn't cave in.  This works down to the last level, where you can't cast obsidian on top of the SMR / Magma Flow tiles.  But it's more likely you'll have Fun before you get down that far ;)

Doesn't the magma come up when you mine the new obsidian to get at the next layer of magma, or are you doing it some other way? ]

The trick is to cast it three or four wide so that you can mine out the inner layers to have a place to drop more.

Me, I'd fine a nice wide spot in the vein and collapse a hollow piston down to that point, then pump out the inside. Much less hassle, and definitely dwarven.
