You can assign unspecific crossbow to a squad.  They will automatically equip the most expensive crossbow available, so as long as you don't produce any adamantine crossbows they should go straight for the silver.

Only you can't make silver crossbows. Bismuth bronze is the best vanilla material for crossbows.

We're talking about ripping those from cold, dead goblin hands and this is certainly possible. Though they usually suck, you want quality for shooting much more then density for bashing. I'd rather have my bowyer carve through an fuckton of wood and take the best wooden crossbows out of that lot.

I'd rather use metal for crossbows, because you can melt down the rejects in magma smelters, and the weaponsmith who makes them can also arm the rest of your troops. If you intercept enough sieges, you should have sufficient metal. Alternately, bones don't have much of a use other than bolts or decorations, so they also make a good economic choice for crossbows in my opinion.

Bone crossbows = wooden axes felling trees imo.

It's kinda strange material doesn't affect crossbow effectiveness though. Stronger material = higher maximum draw strength, no?

Well, not every material is springy enough to be used for a crossbow in the first place. Copper and silver would'nt work at all.

I just pretend the material of the crossbow is what the stock is made out of and the bow is made from ash or yew or steel or whatever.

Given that it's dwarves, I imagine a more mechanical form than a traditional shape.  Instead of a bow on a stock, it's more like two folding arms that spring forward, tied together to form a bow.  Solid arms that are on hinges.  The material of the springs used is abstracted away.

Like a Roman Ballista?

I guess that works too, though I'm not sure how well such a mechanism would work scaled down to a hand-held size.

Instead of tension ropes, it would be springs like you find in common clothespins.
