Effects of Obsidian

Alright, so I'm working on this thing.  It's hard to describe, I'll post screenshots later once I get the wooden version erected.  The wood is plentiful on this map, and temporary.  Later, I plan to cast the entire thing in obsidian.  Still, despite my otherwise dwarfishness (just check my beard for credentials) I've not done much obsidian casting.  So, I'm curious as to what I can expect to happen during the casting, particularly the effect on items and structures in place.  If the items are magma safe, like iron doors, then when I flood them they should be fine.  When cast obsidian, will they be embedded and dug out later, or atom smashed?  Does the casting process alter the nearby floors?  I assume it will leave a rough-hewn obsidian floor, but will it create a rough hewn floor above it?

This fort, if seen through, promises a lot of fluid weapons involved, including several tricks involving pump stacks and suspended glass spheres of liquid.  I expect a large number of deaths.

Structures that have magma and water both on the same tile as them will deconstruct, but any magma-safe items that made up the structures will be embedded in the obsidian and will reappear when you mine it out. If you flood them with water first and then add magma, even non-magma-safe items should remain, though soft biologics will have rotted to skeletons.

If I'm understanding your second and third questions correctly, the answers are no and yes.

If you cast obsidian walls on top of constructed floors, the floors will remain hidden inside the wall. If you mine out the wall, there will be an obsidian floor. If you mine out the floor, however, the original constructed floor will be revealed. Natural floors are entirely replaced. If there was open space on the z-level above the cast wall, then the top of the cast wall will act as a floor. Essentially, a cast-obsidian wall consists of a floor, a wall, then another floor, but the upper floor is present only if there was no floor there previously.

Does this mean if I laid down gold floors, and then cast obsidian, and engraved them, I would have double-plated floors?  Would the room value skyrocket?

Only dwarves would plate gold with stone...

No, the gold would be hidden, and only the engraved-obsidian floors would be counted  :(

Though to be honest engraved cast-obsidian floors are worth more than gold bar or block floors, so obsidian-plated gold floors would improve the value over simple gold floors...

Fair enough.  I'm also looking into ways to control the magma process.  I may (will) need to repaint some rooms to ensure they're engraved properly... or maybe I'll just engrave as the dwarves wish, and when we get to control engravings more I'll worry about it.

I don't know how are you going to do that and whether you use bridges, but be aware that obsidian casting creates floors on the Z-level above if there is a retractable bridge here. You can't mine under a bridge, so you'd need to deconstruct it, and then remove floors. Also if you are not careful, then wild obsidianizing will create pockets of water and magma everywhere.

I made a quick experiment and if the goblin cages are unattached (haven't checked built ones), then flooding them with water and obsidianizing with lava doesn't kill them. After mining out, these wooden goblin cages and goblins themselves are sound and healthy. So it is possible to put them in this "carbonite" and keep safely for future generations. Or torment them. I wonder what happens to such frozen goblins after reclaim. Normally goblins are automatically released from their cages and turned friendly. But how to release a goblin from obsidian wall without mining it out?
