Anyone know how to make DF-style games?
« on: May 28, 2011, 11:41:41 am »

As I understand it, the visual part of Dwarf Fortress is just a grid of tiles rendered by OpenGL. (The simulation part decides which tiles are to be displayed, but that's not what I'm interested in right now.)

I have ideas for programs that would be rendered in a similar way to DF - 2d tiles or sprites. Does anyone know of any good tutorials for getting started with OpenGL on this kind of level? All the tutorials I've seen wander off to talk about 3d stuff that is not relevant to me.

Of course, since he doesn't actually walk around counting things, we can only assume that bookkeeping time is spent in deep meditation, psychically sensing exactly how many piles of orthoclase there are. It takes a while to hone a skill like that.

Google around for Roguelike Tutorials. DF is essentially a roguelike at its core.
