Basic Modding Questions

I do not know how to mod, but I would like to try to do a few things. I do not know where to start, so any help is appreciated. Here is what I want to do:

1. Make custom weapons/armor/items and give them to my characters (as they start out)
2. Make custom races
3. Modify the number of attribute/skill points you start out with

A lot of those questions I recall seeing the answer to somewhere on the DF wiki, and I seem to recall I was looking at tokens, so this is a link to the various modding related articles on the wiki. Most of that is editing raw files from what I've seen. Half of 1, all of 2 and 3 I seem to recall seeing through there. I unfortunately have no knowledge about the other half of 1.

I think the other half of one might be automatic when you add weapons, by buying them at embark. If not, there's probably a way to make them buyable at embark, just like with pets.
