[33g] Caveins causing weird injuries
« on: December 23, 2007, 04:27:00 am »

So far I've had a miner mangle his bones and kidney by collapsing one floor tile yet didn't fall anywhere while the trapper two z-levels below got hit in the head with the falling floor tile and merely went unconcious, a miner collapsed a wall of dirt and somehow fell through the dirt wall and into the river on the other side, and a planter, on the ground, was hit by the resulting dust cloud five tiles away and died from "colliding with an object" when he couldn't have possibly have fallen anywhere.

Yeah, injury systems are kind of silly. It's quite possible the RNG is just playing tricks with you, and the grand majority of the time the obvious person is mangled.

Actually it's the air-pressure.

The shifting of air from chrashing debris can send a dwarf flying in any direction. Particulary in enclosed spaces. Sometimes even sucking the dwarf along   with it. I had a favored pet mule splattered across a solid glass wall after a badly planned excavation sent a massive boulder spinning through the air and through the poor thing's head. Another dwarf was flung into the same wall. But only sustained minor injuries.

My miner moped for a week until I gave him a pet war hound.

The planter that was killed by "collision" was outside, in open air, surrounded by flat terrain, and collided with no walls.  The miner responsible for the death was sent through the area being mined and into the river on the opposite side and one z-level down with mere bruises.

code:

v- Planter
     v- Miner
      v- Dirt wall being mined
        v- River
.......,~~~
.@....@O~~~
.......,~~~
.......,~~~

      #
_@____@#
########____
########~~~~

The miner was sent quite far up the river when he fell in.

As I said, flying debris.

Dust is more lethal than you think. XD

Or maybe he broke his neck from the impact with the ground?

A dwarf's unfailing capacity to believe what he prefers to be true rather than what the evidence shows to be likely and possible has always astounded me. We long for a caring Fortress which will save us from our childish mistakes, and in the face of mountains of evidence to the contrary we will pin all our hopes on the slimmest of doubts. Gold has not been proven not to exist, therefore it must exist.
