You were a messenger...
« on: May 30, 2011, 05:23:57 pm »

Yes. Something. You are definitely SOMETHING. Now if only your head would stop hurting enough to remember what... For the moment though, all you know is that you are at the bottom of a rather deep hole, surrounded by a number of ancient-looking doors, each with a different set of markings on it. There's a light at the top of the hole you must have fallen through, but no obvious way back up.

So... what now?

You are down here because you are infected with a virus that is highly infective and can be dangerous. The markings on the door say "The Dawn, The Day, The Dusk and The Night." and you have a pistol with two shots. You will go through the second door.

You fell down the hole during a midnight stroll. The markings on the door say Arcadia, Macedonia, Ignocamia, and Hiimla. You have a compass and a small walter P38. You want to stay and think for a second.

You are a Swiftleaper, a kind of desert reptilian humanoid known for its speed and jumping ability. Making use of your natural abilities, your chosen profession is that of a desert courier who delivers important messages and supplies across the Great Wastes which separates most habitable settlements. You were bounding across the desert on a mission when you abruptly landed crashed into an unforeseen hole. Now one of your legs are broken, the rest of you is battered and bruised, you are trapped in what appears to be an ancient ruin of some sort, and to top it all off, you can't locate the package you were delivering. It's times like these that make you reconsider your career choice.

There are three doors surrounding you. One has the symbol of the sun on it, the second has the symbol of a crescent moon, and the last has a symbol that looks like the face of a demon. Besides the package you were carrying, you traveled with some basic medical supplies, a scimitar for protection, a bullwhip, a map of the desert, and enough water to survive a week (with rationing).

Ah yes, you fell down here while trying to deliver a package containing... food? Water? Anyway, you were delivering something to a remote town out here, and now... yeah, yeah that leg is definitely broken. Still got plenty of supplies for now, but there's no way you're leaving this place in this condition... and for that matter, you've never seen anything even remotely like this architecture before... Not wasting any time, you make a simple splint for your leg and take a better look around. Not the most reassuring trio of doors.. but nothing to do now but pick one. Or is there another option?

Sunlight bursts into the bottom of your hole when you push open the door. After a momentary blindness, you look around in amazement. The doors opened into what appears to be an entire world. You are on top some kind of cliff or mountain overlooking a lush but frighteningly primeval jungle. The sound of a waterfall is close-by, but you cannot place its location. You see a mountain path that leads down into the jungle, and something along its course which vaguely looks like a small tribal village. Rising directly across from you on the other side of the jungle valley is a dawning sun.

Opening the least threatening door, you are taken aback by the massive cavern before you, some unknown source of illumination filling the green expanse below you. After a closer look around, you see that you are still underground, cave walls stretching off into the distance, too far to make out the ends. Before you have time to ponder this strange place's existence, there is a flash of light, and everything suddenly falls dark, the same forest now filled with strange moving points of light, and you cannot shake the overbearing sense that something is watching you. Still you are not given time to think, and the world changes again, the light returning in the form of magma, pouring down the walls of this gigantic cavern as the trees below are replaced by withered and blackened things, a large silver tower rising where the small village once was.

It is mere seconds before the strange changes fade away, and with one final flash of light the valley before you has returned to it's original sun-bathed state... but now there stands a humanoid figure on the cliff face, mere feet in front of you. It has no features, no clothing, no defining traits at all. It looks more like a clay sculpture of a man, a prototype of a humanoid body with no details added. The figure stares at you silently, the only indication that it lives being the occasional flutter of it's eyes.

Greet the creature cautiously, ask where this place is.

The creature makes no sound, still staring blankly at you as you speak. After a long moment of awkward silence, the figure's eyes close, and a disembodied voice rings out in your mind.

"Hello traveler. You are far from your home, quite far indeed... and this place is not safe for one so singular as yourself. I cannot help you leave this place... but I can help you survive it. This world is divided into three, and so to survive it so must you be. Body, mind, and soul, usually in a perfect balance for you, must be separated. You have seen the three realities that make up this place. Now which part of you shall explore each?"
