Damn Goblin Repeater, why won't you work ?
« on: May 16, 2011, 05:04:09 am »

It is amusing how you make the same mistakes when you start building slightly complicated things in Dwarf Fortress after a little break.

I am attempting to build a Goblin Repeater to trigger my 5*5 Danger Room.

My first attempt I build the danger room using Weapon Traps instead of Upright Spear Traps, so I had to replace all the traps.
The second attempt I mistakenly set the trigger weight for the Pressure Plate too high so the plate did not trigger and the goblin could just walk out of the repeater (straight into a Cage Trap). Amusingly, apparently you can't change the trigger weight after placing the plate, so I had to replace the pressure plate and reconnect everything.
The third time the goblin triggered the pressure plate, which opened the door, but did NOT raise the 1-tile bridge, allowing the goblin to walk out again...

I checked and rechecked and I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong...why does the bridge not raise ?

Bridges have a 100 cycle delay between when they are triggered by a lever or pressure plate, and when they actually raise or retract.  So if you're using a pressure plate to trigger a bridge, the goblin will walk right over the bridge before it has a chance to open.  Use a floor hatch instead.  Floor hatches open instantly, so a pressure plate right before a floor hatch will work.

Oh sweet. I remember my old repeater was much too big so I guess that's why a bridge worked there (as it took the slugman ages to get there).
I will try as soon as I have time to play again in a day or two.
My thanks !  8)

Why a gobbo? Just set a lever on repeat, give the slackers something to do

How do you stop that repeater if need be? Do you have linked these hatch/door to a lever?

The whole concept of a goblin powering the danger room where the soldiers are training to kill his brethren just makes me feel all warm and dwarfy inside  :P

There is a lever room slightly to the east. Alternatively, I just tell someone to get the door and the goblin will walk into the cage trap to be re-pitted into the repeater when maintenance is done. Rarely, a cat will manage to get in and disrupt the repeater, but this is easily remedied.
