What squads setup do you use?
« on: May 15, 2011, 04:25:15 pm »

I currently use the following:

Training dwarves train in 2 dwarf squads with experienced teachers (mostly embark dwarves), ideally those dont fight at all(usually they have to). They use average weapons&armor.

Those who reached legendary or at least some decent level go to professional army squads which patrol the surface or train there. They get best weapons&armor.

1 squad is unskilled and unfit for training guards who patrol caverns/caverns entrance/whatever else needed. They get average-to-good weapons&armor. They also fight forgotten beasts with deadly dust/vapors, titans and dragons. Usually have to send them to sieges too. Those who get to decent skills are transferred to army or as teachers to teaching squads.

All civilian population is in marksdwarves squads.Usually copper crossbows and wooded shields (probably good idea to swich to wooded or bone crossbows for less weight). Some of them may patrol walls (~1 dwarf per wall) if enemies are unlikely to have ranged weapons.

Squads 1 - 8

Active Military

Full armor, 2 axes, 2 swords, 2 spears, mace, hammer, two marksmen.

1 - 4 for surface threats, 5 - 8 for underground, Permanenet "active, training" duty.

Squad 9

Reserve

Full armor, melee weapon of choice.

Assigned barracks, but left inactive (individual drills), enabled pumping labor and animal training labor

This squad is primary source for replacements should someone from regular military fall.

Squad 10

Guards

Full Armor, wooden shields, wooden crossbows

Assigned barracks and archery targets, but left inactive (individual drills), enabled animal training labor

This squad delivers justice and is source for replacement of fallem marksmen in regular military.

Squad 11+

True milita - weapon of choice, full armor, left inactive and without barracks. Only Miners, Woodcutters and Hunters are exempt.

I start with a full melee squad to get extra meat in and handle any early gob/caverns agression. As marksdwarves a little more tricky to train (and situational, good on the walls not toe-to-toe) later on. I like to keep the equipment seperate. I'll have ranged and melee squads but not mixed as I don't want to waste half the melee half of a squad by stationing it on the walls, and I don't want to put ranged units in the way of melee enemies (Urist Mcmarksdwarf: cancels shoot from afar, reason preparing for glory by bashing FB with xbows :().

I try and give everyone decent equipment, but my best gear goes to the most experienced troops, and my most experienced troops get the most dangerous assignments. When I have some very good troops, I'll bud a few off to rookie squads to help teach the noobs a thing or two.

I have four squads: archers, hammerdwarves, misc. melee and wrestlers. I try to keep them evenly populated, and no more than 5 each.

Currently I have squad "a" melee, squad "b" marksdwarves, squad "c" backup melee, squad "d" backup marksdwarves, and typically the rest are guard (which is also backup melee) + civilians ('cause naked dwarves are just not aesthetic, especially if they have crushed skulls).

I've been thinking about changing it around, having a "teaching" squad like utuki, but I haven't tried it yet.

That's exactly what I do too.   :)

Then it happened. Then I cringed. Then I picked it up and beat him to death with it, and then his buddies, too.

Always try to embark with a dwarf with basic military skills, plus teaching and organizing.Set him/her as militia commander. Run all recruits through it, equipped with a shield/helmet. At this stage I use a danger room, since shield use is a priority for any soldier. When a migrant with military skills arrive, assign them to either a basic Melee, or Marksdwarf squad, and set them on Active, train a month, off a month. When the recruits have improved, assign them to either marksdwarf(female) or melee(male).
With the military scheduling, have the experienced dwarves train, other off duty to invid train in weapons. You can schedule who is preferred to train with orders.
Then when all current members in the squad are at least novice in their weapon assigned, split them up into separate squads according to weapon skill. They will spar, with at least novice skill in a weapon.
I like a axe squad, and hammer squad as front line troops. Will cross train my marksdwarves in hammer, since I only assign training bolts to them when they get rusty. Equipped with decent armor, can then reassign them to melee squads, if needed. On training months, the crossbow troops get to refresh shield, armor, crossbow, and hammer skills.
If you are going to put clothes on the naked civilians, might as well assign them cheap crossbows, and bolts. In emergencies, use them for fire support. Just leave them inactive, with no training area

Should you fail to comply, strict !!disciplinary actions!! will be taken. Also, we feel we should remind you that one of the "criminals" on your list is the chief medical dwarf. If he ends up too badly injured to do his job, you will be fired. Out of a magma cannon.
