Dwarfs don't need to be soldiers to be overpowered. I have an engraver who has agility over 2700, with racial average of 900. She runs one tile per 6 ticks (when hauling goblin bodies) which is as fast as they fall down gravitationally, about twice the speed of average dwarves. She won't kill anything, but will run away from it. Soldiers can have such agility after long training, but they are usually burdened by heavy armor, so they run slightly slower.

Over time soldiers will become immensely strong, tough, and perfectly agile. A dwarf with these physical stats, plus legendary at dodge, block, and with their weapon, is basically a jedi master. Give him a masterwork steel sword (which will in time be named and promoted to being an artifact) and he may as well have a lightsaber.

Yep, all my military dwarves have named items. Some of them even 3 (shield and two weapons), total of 79 named item. Odd thing is sometimes they drop they "artifacts" and get newer, better weapons/shields, and name them too. But only one of these fifty soldiers have Agility better than the engraver I mentioned. Most of them have it below 2000. Toughness and Strength however are much higher.
