What happens to the world while you're playing a fortress?

So after you gen the world and have your seven dwarfs digging around and fighting off a catsplosion does the world continue to develop? For example do forests get cut down if you import insane amounts of wood from dwarves/goblins?

The world does not seem to continue developing after you start up Fortress Mode.I imagine it is because all dwarves and merchants are time wizards.

Time freezes for the outside world after worldgen. Release 5 on the dev page is all about unfreezing it.
