Question about freezing
« on: May 15, 2011, 01:51:06 am »

Quick question: Say I have a hatch cover in the middle of a river that freezes. when it freezes is the hatch cover destroyed, or is it fine?

No. I suppose there are similarities, but I'm fairly certain angry birds doesn't let me charge into a battalion of knights with a car made of circular saws.

Unless it's somehow in the middle of the water, it should be fine. I'm assuming it's attatched to the bottom of the river; the freezing shouldn't affect it.

I don't think that freezing affects furniture anyway. I may be wrong.
It certainly has adverse effects on your dwarves.

Let me see if I understand.

You have a hatch cover on a frozen lake, covering a tunnel of some sort. Come spring or summer, when the lake thaws, the hatch cover building will be deconstructed, but the hatch cover item will be fine (if stuck to the bottom of the lake). I don't however, know what happens when it freezes again. I think you can mine it out and retrieve your hatch cover.

ok a little background then: I've run my entrance right under the river I embarked, hoping to use the freezing time as an easy way to dig channels right in the river directly above my entrance, creating the first part of a drowning trap. BUT! if the hatches deconstruct every time it freezes, then that might be a bad idea....

If the hatch is on the bottom of the river, then there's nothing to be worried about. If the hatch is on the surface of the river, and not adjacent to a land tile, then it will deconstruct.
