Do unorthodox trap damage types work?
« on: January 06, 2007, 05:36:00 am »

Pretty much exactly as it says. I finally got a fortress up with my traps that do bludgeon, burn, and gore damage, and I'm not really sure they actually work.

The gore trap has very low damage and it might have been absorbed entirely by armor, but several sieging enemies walked right past the burn-damage traps without so much as a scratch. Not sure yet of the effectiveness of bludgeon-damage.

If you happen to know, Toady, are all the damage types viable entries in a trap component? At the very least I'm very strongly suspecting BURN doesn't work; GORE and BLUDGEON may, but my evidence is inconclusive. Be interesting to know.

I'm guessing it wasn't an elite goblin or anything like that, who might have evaded the trap entirely?

It was two or three of them. I don't think any were elite, as this was a preliminary siege (just a handful of attackers, no real organization, and no elite soldiers). What determines the ability to evade traps outright?

It's an on-off thing. You either have the ability (kobold thieves) or you don't (goblins). There's the exception of creatures with the ability to fly, where they will not trigger traps until they land and start walking around.

I don't think it's that simple... I've seen elite goblins walk right through my layers of enormous iron corkscrews only to take a spiked iron ball to the side of the head.  That said, certain creatures definitely have the ability to ignore traps entirely (the aforementioned kobold thieves, bronze colossuses (colossi?), etc.)  And, of course, if a trap is resetting, it won't go off no matter who steps on it.

They might be blocking/parrying the weapon attacks triggered by the traps, since their stats are pretty decent.

Unless you're noticing that there isn't any triggering going on (blinking to dark red for a few seconds), then that is a different issue altogether. I've had that happen with the early layers of my trapped entrance and demolishing then rebuilding them seems to do the trick. One goblin squad certainly didn't like the effects, anyway.

Well, the traps not being capable of firing isn't the problem; the regular goblins die in droves.  ;) I'll have to pay attention next time there's a goblin siege.  As far as I can recall, the elites set 'em off but avoid the damage, but that's relying on my notoriously shoddy memory...

Yeah, the damage is administered exactly as a weapon or anything else, so if you've set them up like that, they should work, since it just does a weapon attack (which is why the elites can block/evade them at times).  If you throw the components in adventure mode, that should be a fair test.

I've never seen the traps be anything but bright red, but the bodies, blood, and gore kinda obscure things...

BTW, do more weapons make the trap harder to parry/block?

Yeah, each weapon gets a separate attack.  Some trap components get several attempts.
