Having just been destroyed by the demons i tried to quit the current fortress but when it is offloading units i get an "inflate error -3" but the save file is still all right to load just before the demons destroy me

At a guess, either the daemons coming in and destorying everything broke something, or your files are already corrupted, it just doesn't show until the game tries to offload the units on fortress abandonment.

Can you load then immediately abandon without problems?

no i can't. It crashes whenever it tries to offload unit 95.. I am not sure how to go in a nd remove that unit so I can keep this world for adventure mode, but it looks like i'm stuck with only one fortress

Yeah, once you get an inflate error, something is shot.  If it crashes on unit 95/300 or something like that during offload, it's hard to say which chunk was affected, since the 95 has nothing to do with the units actual ID number (it'll either be a new unit or one of the ~10000 created during world gen).  The unit files each contain 100 units.  In general, these unit file corruptions can't be salvaged.  It could be caused by a bug or an unintended/improper closure of the game, or by copying files around.
