Once you get the hang of the controls and what's needed, it can be pretty easy to make a successful fortress.  Pick an easy place to build, make the fort, seal it off when gobs come until you can make an entrance filled with traps that no siege can pass...

The "seal it off" only works because "invaders can dig tunnels and destroy walls" is not yet implemented. So I try to play "never seal off" style. Sealing off is about the same as turning sieges off in the init.

The world has magic, therefore some invaders (especially clever ones) should get past traps using the TrainAvoid tag on some castes. Implemented in the Genesis mod.

==OldGenesis mod== by Deon & TomiTapio. Five wood classes, four leather classes. Nine enemy civs. So much fine-tuning.

I'm about nine years into a fortress designed to be entirely sealed off. Ghosts from dead migrants and traders keep killing my best dwarves and without carefully managed cave grass, animals go berserk.

If it's sealed off, how do the ghosts get in?

On the cruelty of dwarfiness:

I would probably leave leave this out of your presentation, but in case you decide otherwise.

Take the mermaid thread, for example. I don't see it as cruelty at all. I see it as indifference. The dwarf attitude is that nothing matters except for industry. We don't capture mermaids just to make them suffer. That would be a waste of energy. We capture them and force them to breed and air drown them and all that stuff simply because it's the most effective way of harvesting their bones, which are very valuable. We don't want them to suffer, we just don't care if they do.
