Hospital not claiming stocks
« on: May 07, 2011, 09:17:59 am »

I have one of my legendary miners sitting in the hospital with a bunch of broken bones that require immobilization as a result of a disastrous well-draining attempt. I guess I shouldn't say attempt, the well is in fact empty now but that's a different problem.

So I made a bunch of splints. The problem I'm having is the splints never make it to the hospital. I have ~25 splints and crutches in a custom finished goods stockpile in the hospital zone but when I look at the hospital inventory it still says 0. I have the recommended 4 containers and cabinets, it is a mystery.

Do not put a custom stockpile of any type in the hospital.  Stockpiles in hospitals don't count as supplies stocked in the hospital.  Instead, build a dozen or so chests or coffers and build them in the hospital zone.

Make sure you don't have an office or some other designated room/space overlapping your hospital. When I first started I was making the hospital zone also into my medical doctor's office (yeah, I know they don't need one, I just liked it. Doctors should have offices!), and that kept them from stocking up the chests.

Also, make sure you're using chests (and bags I guess), since I don't think they stock the hospital supplies in cabinets.

Edit: Oh yeah, I guess I didn't need to quote, was thinking this was part of the little questions thread for some reason, duh. And yeah, as the person who ninja'ed me said, lose the stockpile, I missed that part.

There's currently a bug where, if you have containers in the hospital - containers as in bags OR chest OR coffers- the dwarves will stock supplies without regard to the limit, thus filling up all your containers and leaving no room for any as-yet-need-to-be-stocked supplies, like splints.

I had stockpiles outside the hospital zone, 4 built chests inside the hospital zone, the dwarves start filling them with cloth, thread, buckets and at last they filled crutches and splints, maybe there's a priority order or maybe there was that some stockpiles were closer than other...

at least the thread and buckets were furthest from the hospital than the crutches/splints...

soap I can't tell since I made some after the initial filling ended, what about gypsum plaster?? How do you get your dwarves to haul it to the hospital??

you can always use "t" to check the chest's contents and dump anything stupid your dwarves haul....

By the way, my dwarf needed dressing, the stupid wound dresser instead of grabbing some cloth from the hospital's chests, he went to my cloth stockpiles and hauled some cloth to dress the wound... what's the point on having chests if they are not going to use them?

the most ironic is that the wound dresser wouldn't start cleaning the wounded dwarf before the chests had all the supplies...  ::)

Which isn't a real big deal, as doctors will pull supplies from any stockpile in the fortress.

I generally create a crutch/splint stockpile somewhere near the hospital for overflow.

Are you sure the hospital stocking limits aren't being respected? It seems like they are for most thngs.

Four chests/coffers isn't enough. I'd say put 10 in there at a minimum. And yea, don't use stockpiles. Just put the coffers inside the activity zone.

They are not respected. I still have 5x more cloth and thread than ordered, but only 10-20% of other things, dwarves like to steal soap for baths, and they recently stole last bucket, so it's 0% now. It's like a third word hospital, with corrupted and demoralized staff. Fortunately I haven't had an accident in more than a year (I don't count babies, which are untreatable anyway)  so hospital is currently devoid of patients. But when hard times come...

Just wait until dwarves have their own money and can steal things for their own private enrichment. Things can only get worse....

Workaround for this bug: build 1 container at a time, wait for dwarfs to fill it, then build next container.  They try to fill all empty containers when stocks are below required levels, so set stock levels low and build 1 container at a time.  Occasionally check if you need another container, and if you end up with 6 or 7 chests full of cloth, just remove the extra containers from the hospital.

Also, obviously, magma avalanches and tsunamis weren't exactly a contingency covered in the mission briefing.
I can assure you that Ardentdikes is not the first fortress to be flooded with magma. What's unusual is that we actually meant to flood it with magma.

I got rid of the stockpile and my doctors are now treating patients but the hospital inventory is still empty except for cloth and thread. I'm assuming the doctors are just going outside the hospital to get the supplies they need.

I did look through the cabinets and bags and found they are mostly empty so I don't know what is going on.

By the way, my dwarf needed dressing, the stupid wound dresser instead of grabbing some cloth from the hospital's chests, he went to my cloth stockpiles and hauled some cloth to dress the wound... what's the point on having chests if they are not going to use them?

When a dwarf accepts a job (such as Dress Wound) which requires materials to perform (such as cloth), he'll grab the closest available material.  So if he happened to be outside the hospital at the time, the closest material was probably in some stockpile.

The point of having the materials in the hospital is for the next job he does.  He'll probably have to do more than just dress one wound, so for the next job, he'll probably use material from the hospital.

Cleaning requires soap and a bucket, and if all of those were in transit to the hospital, then he'd have to wait for one of them to become available.

Build chests, in your hospital, not cabinets.

The way I understand the coffer issue:

- You place a coffer in the hospital
- Every idle dwarf in the fort suddenly goes insane and grabs hospital type things to stuff in the coffer

So if you only have a handful of dwarves idle, you'll see a modest overflow.  If you have a lot of dwarves idle, you'll see a massive overflow.
