Aquatic Elves and Nobles
« on: January 03, 2007, 08:17:00 pm »

Recently I ended up flooding the world in one of my fortresses, and rather than just abandoning, I decided to watch and see what happened. Eventually, an elven caravan showed up, in the horrible lake that was the outside of my fortress, and proceeded to slowly meander to my still-standing trade depot... without ever drowning.

Later, a wave of migrants showed up - specifically all the nobles who had died - and also walked to the front of my fortress,  again (IIRC) never drowning.

Is the water shallow outside the fortress, given enough time? It's not AFAIK, so I can only assume this is some bug. Perhaps because they zoned in in it, they're treating it just as flat ground? I don't know.

water is treated as shallow enough for living outside the fortress, IIRC.

I've had a stark raving mad Human Diplomat wade through my moat without ever drowning or getting tired (which happens when they start to drown). Then he waded back after seeing the hostile goblins rushing towards him. Still nothing.

As long as it's not it a channel and outside, it's shallow. However in a channel it's deep. This means that any dwarfs stuck in your moat won't drown, but they can't get out.

Actually, I've had dwarves in dug out channels drown. BUT, there's some wierdness going on with channels underneath a raised bridge. It seems that creatures won't drown when they are in channels that a bridge is raised from. They'll move around much more slowly, but they don't show the usual signs of floundering (blinking ?, random movement all over the place, the X for exhaustion/tiredness if they reach land).

Yeah, with the raised bridge, it's likely more of the many exceptions that come from not having an actual Z coordinate for the flows.
