site finder stopped working?
« on: May 08, 2011, 06:24:37 pm »

So, my first world, it worked fine. but I wasn't very happy with it. I couldn't find a useful spot at all. So I generated a new world with some different parameters. I ran the site finder, telling it to give me flux stone, a river, no aquafier, some soil, and shallow metal

now on the first world, every site it recommended matched perfectly.

On the second world, I've looked at 3 dozen sites and most of them don't match at all. Most have most of the parameters, but the first 30 sites don't have flux stone listed.
a few don't even have a river available.

some kind of bug?

(yes I'm checking all biomes on the embark area)

When your search finishes, are any of the criteria you've selected showing up in red? If so, the site finder wasn't able to find a site that met all of your requirements, and is merely recommending those that came closest. If, on the other hand, they're all showing up green, then it may actually be a bug (though flux can still appear and be recognized by the site finder even if it doesn't appear on the biome details).

Something else to consider is that the soil search currently appears to be an "Equal to or less than" parameter - that is, setting it to 'Some soil' means that it will filter out sites with deep and very deep soil. If this is what you wanted, great! If you'd rather have a minimum of 'Some soil', then I'd recommend setting this parameter to N/A and searching the results by hand. As a bonus, one fewer parameters increases your chances of finding sites that meet all your other criteria, in theory.

nope, no red words. Do any flux stones show up on dfprospector? I should have ran that to see.
Soil, I understood, but some of the other ones just weren't showing up at all.
I finally got fed up and had to go out.
I'll check again in a bit and see if I can get a match again. I remember what it looks like when it doesn't match. The first time I ran it with a lot of specific stuff it failed on me, it didn't look like that at all

Embark screen only shows shallow flux, like chalk and limestone. However, the site finder sees the marble in the depths too. So trust the finder more.

Excellent.. I'm really not a fan of the new embark screen.. we're making such a permanent choice, we should get a little more info like we did last time.
but good to know about the other flux
makes slightly more sense now.
