Relocating saplings.
« on: May 07, 2011, 04:08:12 pm »

A pretty simple idea. This'd be a new task that'd go under Farming, and uses a zone. You'd need to specify a "sapling planting" zone over a soil layer. Then you'd have to designate saplings for relocating, and they'd get moved to that zone. This essentially allows you to make a tree farm without getting coloured wood/having to breach a cavern layer/getting underground saplings and trees all over your fort. Dwarves with lower levels in this skill (any suggestions for names? I was thinking "Botany", but eh...) would occasionally bungle up the sapling extraction ("Oi, see that Urist? Snapped it clean in 'alf!"), which'd of course get fewer and far between as they get better at it.

Forestry? Might be a name.

I think it's the way towns develop now. In the beginning, people move into a town. Then they start producing tables, which results in more and more tables. Soon tables represent a significant portion of the population, they start lobbying for new laws and regulations, putting people to greater and greater disadvantage...
Link for full quote. 'tis mighty funny.

Yes, definitely! When fruit and nut trees appear in the game, we're going to need something like this. Seems like an elegant solution to creating orchards, wind breaks, and other uses for trees. Getting a sapling could be added to the designation menu and planting a sapling could just be added to the build menu.

Kotakus Improved Farming thread has ideas on how this could be done, I suggest you take a look there.

I think that it would be good if you could plant trees from seed, so you could just scatter seeds and hope for trees, you could use a nursery to get saplings, or you could just relocate saplings.

I believe you can grow trees in farm plots with some modding, but I think there should be a kind of manual "tree farm" option that doesn't require farming.

The thing is soil doesn't need depth in order to be farmed, but for trees to grow there normally there must be a complete "wall" of soil beneath. I believe Toady wanted to make farming in soil require a complete wall of soil beneath too, but this resulted in the "unable to farm in soil" bug.

Given current events, I've altered my profile pic and I'm sorry it took so long to fix. If you find the old one on any of my accounts elsewhere on the internet, let me know by message (along with the specific site) and I'll fix. Can't link the revised avatar for some reason.

Actually, the Improved Farming thread was mostly my discussion of ways to improve what was already going into the game.  If you look on the devpage, "the ability to plant trees" is already slated for being put into the game.

If, however, you want to talk about something like taking a clipping of an existing tree to make a new tree, or outright uprooting a tree and relocating it, go ahead and throw it in the list, but right now, we should already be getting the basic concept of "plant a row of trees where you want them".
