I have not played in a while. I think my biggest issue was performance. How is the performance of DF in recent updates?

It's faster, given the same-size map and same number of z-levels, than 40d, but not the 40d# series.

It's slower than 40d, overall, however, due to the average map having several times as many z-levels.

The most recent updates have improved on FPS issues since, say, 31.16, especially solving large FPS drops that could be caused by ghosts. For the most part, though, it'll probably be roughly the same as your prior experience. Look into articles on maximizing FPS if you have too much of a problem.
