do dwarf families share bedrooms, or do i have to give each dwarf their own?  maybe i can set up two beds for couples in the same bedroom if they dont share.

Couples share rooms once they're married, and babies don't need rooms of their own. Children will claim bedrooms. Also, if both halves of a couple owned bedrooms individually before they married, they'll continue to own both rooms. You've got to free one manually if this happens.

Also, you don't need more than one bed. Couples will share a bed with each other and their babies.

It's called a dorm, the option is right there when you create a room from a bed

Toady needs to add rock couches to the list of furniture that we can make.

Actually it sounded like a great idea even before he explained it. Locking your whole fortress in a closet and forcing them to marry and breed? WOOHOO!

I've seen a dwarf sleeping and another dwarf engraving the floor under the bed. 

That would be a neat trick, because placed furniture prevents the smoothing/engraving of the stone underneath the already placed furniture.  (The engraver was probably doing a wall or adjacent floor tile.)
