Need help with cave-ins!
« on: May 07, 2011, 01:03:08 am »

This is rather urgent, as fun is about to happen if I can't figure out a quick way to create a proper cave in.  I've got a forgotten beast slowly eating through my fortress doors.  My first "cave-in" trap room didn't exactly help.  In fact, it didn't cause a cave in at all.  So I'm hoping someone can help me out with what I'm doing wrong here.  First: A picture.

As you can see, it's only a matter of time before bad things happen.  I've got miners trapped until I can kill this thing.  If I'm unable to cause a proper cave in, I'll probably just conscript all 72 dwarves and see if I can kill it by piling them on top if it.

A gigantic hairy crocodile.  It has an enormous shell and it squirms and fidgets.  Its lavender blush hair is long and shaggy.  Beware its poisonous gas!

MAGMAAAAAA

Always a solution.

Also, that image site looks less than trustworthy, so I hope you don't take offence if I choose not to click your picture.

What's a good site?  Also no time for Magma or I would.  That particular doomsday trap hadn't been finished yet.

Have you channeled out all the tiles in the room/solid rock above that one?

Yes. if diagram is is your ground floor of the room you want to drop things on, digram b will be the floor above that, and diagram C will be the floor above that.

For a 10x10 cave in:

= is floors
D is dirt/solid rock
diagram A:

Diagram B:
hhhhhhhhhh
hDDDDDDDDh
hDDDDDDDDh
hDDDDDDDDh
hDDDDDDDDh

hhhhhhhhhh

Diagram c:

Wait so I need to build floors on the third floor up and leave the floor directly above it completely full(or by solid rock do you mean dig it out but don't build floor constructions)?  I thought I had to channel all the dirt out of the floor above it?

You want a solid block of stone to drop down on whatever you are killing. you acomplish this by having said block of stone cut off from everything but the one support that is attatched to the lever and holding it all up.
On the sides of the block of stone, it is channeled all the way around. Likewise, it needs to be detatched from the floor(s) above it, so you completely dig out the layer above it and also channel down around the outside.

Shows the same basic principle at work, except that that one is for breaching aquifers. But the cavein logic holds true.

Ah, but why do I need to dig out AND build a floor on the third level up?

Think of a big ass rock on a collapsible pillar. That rock isn't going to fall when the pillar deconstructs if it's attached to more rock above it like a stalactite. You have to destroy the rock above the part where you want to drop. You need it to be free floating. That is to say, it must not touch anything, at any z level, beyond the pillar that holds it up. If you have rock beneath the boulder, it's going to hold it up when the pillar goes. If you have rock above the pillar, it's going to hold it in place like how a person holds onto a ledge despite the villain pushing out the chair the hero was standing on.

Problem encountered.  I built several test rooms to make sure I had it down correctly, and I've had both of them collapse and one dwarven fatality as a result.

Here's what I'm doing.

= is a dirt,cave,whatever floor.
I is a support
h is channeled
c is a constructed floor made from stone/blocks/whatever
S is a stairway

What I want it to look like eventually -

Ground floor:
=======
=======
===I===
=======
=======

Second Floor:
hhhhhhh
h=====h
h=====h
h=====h
hhhhhhh

Third Floor:
hhhhhhh
hccccch
hccccch
hccccch
hhhhhhh

However, as soon as I channel the last tile on the second or third floor it all falls apart regardless of the support.

That is odd.

Try it with the support on the third floor, attatched to the ceiling.

You don't need to make a constructed floor.

Here's how it should look in side-view:

█ = solid wall
░ = empty space
▄ = floor from digging out the area
▓ = support

█░▄▄▄▄▄░█
█░█████░█
█▄▄▄▓▄▄▄█
