TBS Games Similar to the Warlords Series
« on: May 07, 2011, 05:19:36 pm »

Title says it all.
I loved Warlords III when I was ten or so, and have been trying to find similar games since. I have Warlords II, and that is entertaining sometimes, but I was wondering if there were other good games on the market (preferably free) that were similar.
Thanks for any suggestions!

Heh, I loved Warlords 1 when I was 10 or so.   :P

The only one I can think of off hand is The Battle for Wesnoth:  http://www.wesnoth.org/

Not really, from what I have found. People are going to offer up Heroes of Might and Magic as well as Age of Wonders, which are both great games but differ greatly from the Warlords formula.

As a side note, after many many many hours of Warlords 3 my brother and I found a silly way to play. You pick one AI team to be your ally. The whole goal is to make your ally as powerful as possible. You can attack your own ally, but not eachother or eachother's allies. Instead you start a war and leave castles undefended or crush other AI around your ally and let them take stuff over. The fail AI made this difficult but more entertaining than the standard game of "Stack elf archers everywhere, build an undefeatable army and steam roll all over the map." Often our games just ended with a big hero battle in the middle.

Wow, beefing up the AI ally.  I've inadvertently done this, but never thought to actually try this method of gameplay.  Awesome idea!

I really wouldn't say that Battle of Wesnoth is like the Warlords series.

I'd probably say Master of Magic is similar, but only if you took away the whole "playing as Wizard" part.  So, it's not really similar at all, lol.

Personally, I liked Warlords II Deluxe better than what little I played of Warlords III. The fact that you had a complete scenario editor built into it was very nice, including a Warlords I scenario, IIRC.

Warlords Battlecry III had something special to it too, but it wasn't anything like Warlords II, of course. (Personally, I like it better than Warcraft III, but I'm not sure that anyone else agrees with me, since I haven't been able to convince anyone else to get it to play with me :P)

I'm not really familiar with any games which are really similar to either Warlords I or II. There's no city building, per se, no real micromanagement besides that you could buy the ability to make better units in a city, and that you were managing your armies. No magic. You had heroes, but they didn't gain skills or spells IIRC. If your units went into the water they became boats. Master of Magic and Age of Wonders are both too complex - they have magic, and city building. Wesnoth doesn't have city building, just army management, so it's closer in many ways, but it doesn't have town/castle capturing and construction of new units.

I didn't really like the one HOMM game that I bought from GoG - It didn't have the feel of either Warlords, or of any of the more sophisticated games.

Looks like I'm sticking with WII until I dig up my dad's old copy of WIII when I visit him, then. The expansion for WIII comes with a scenario editor as well, I believe. Thank you for all the suggestions!
