DROID Phones
« on: May 07, 2011, 07:19:18 pm »

This doesnt really fall under Life Advice but I have a technical question that I thought someone here could answer.  I have a Droid 2 Global and I am moving music from my PC to my phone.  On my PC I have 2.7 gigs of music.  My phone has 9 gigs of memory.  After transfering my music, I find that my phone only has 3 gigs left.  How does 2.7 gigs of music on a PC become 6 gigs of music on a droid?  Are they not using the same format?  Is there some kind of file compression on my PC that I am unaware of?  All of the music is MP3's.  How could that change and become a larger file?

Sure you didn't copy the music like 3 times? Happened to me a few times.

Yeah. i did that once, but erased the whole thing and checked track by track (for as long as I could, I have over 3000 tracks!).  I found that the phone goes to WMA files from mp3's.  not sure if thats the cause tho.

It transformed your mp3 into WMA? Yes, that's the problem. And a bit weird, too. WMA file are usually much bigger than MP3, though you could compress them further.

Bigger yes, but three times bigger? Sounds kind of odd, I mean, even wav files don't grow that big.

unless it's copying the mp3's and converting them on the phone. Then you'd have two copies on the phone (one mp3 and one wma). It'd be really stupid and weird, but it seems like we might be in that realm even with converting them to wma. Seriously... wma?

I guess that they are converted in wma bu in a much higer bitrate. Of course, why wma? That format is not well supported under Linux, usually, and is lousy overall. Convert them yourself in ogg, using audacity, hopefully your gsm will read them (else there is something wrong with 'droid : a distro that natively read mp3 but not ogg?)

I was going to post a picture of where I saw that all the copied stuff was to be formatted to WMA, but now I cant find it.  If I look at the library on my phone via my PC, its says they are MP3's and each file says its the same size, but if i compare the directories on my PC and my phone with the same music, they are 3 GB's different, which makes no sense to me.  I have decided to erase everything on my phone and use Rhapsody on it instead.
