The 2012 GOP candidates will be gearing up for the first debate between nomination hopefuls to run against Obama. It will take place on Fox News.

Sure looks fair and balanced.

For sure to show: Tim Pawlenty, Ron Paul, Rick Santorum, Herman Cain and Gary Johnson.

Now, here’s a list of candidates who will not be appearing on Thursday night: Michelle Bachmann, Mitch Daniels, Newt Gingrich, Mike Huckabee, Mitt Romney, Donald Trump and Sarah Palin all will not be attending. Bachmann, Gingrich and Romney have been clear about their interest in pursuing the nomination. Daniels, Huckabee, Palin and Trump have been clearly hesitant to officially jump into the fray.

Welp, things looking pretty good for Obama, methinks.

I doubt sincerely that Trump is actually interested in trying, he just wants TV ratings - it's sweeps and the Apprentice had been lagging.

Herman Cain is solidly thought to have won the debate, no doubt bouyed by the Tea Party and Fox News' subtle racism.

Almost word for word copying Ronald Reagan's stump speeches, and having no actual legislative-record to run away from, certainly helps.

I thoroughly enjoyed it for the crowd's uproarious approval of Ron Paul's platform that gay marriage, prostitution, and heroin are individual choices which the government should stay out of.  That reaction honestly surprised me, as it did the crowd themselves apparently.  I'll admit that Ron Paul is frequently worth a listen, if only to hear his truly creative explanations for his policy positions (which he almost never actually introduces to the House).  It does say an awful lot about the nature of the "race" this early on that the only people Fox News can get to show up for a debate are the true-believer libertarians and a couple professional campaigners.
