38c strange soldier actions (off-duty), problem with mor
« on: February 29, 2008, 05:50:00 am »

In my new 38c pocket world I made a fortress of wood, almost no underground parts... And the problem appeared when I recruited first dwarves. I have 4 wrestlers and 2 marksdwarves now.
The problem is that there's only 1 marksdwarf (leader of the squad) shooting, and another just wanders around him.

And my wrestlers PATROL the map (I can't call it another way), though I have no patrol points assigned and they're off duty... But they run here and there and sometimes sit on my longhouse's roof. Gut I barely see them having any spar (also they do not sleep in barracks, but in wilderness).

I don't know what causes it, but it's really strange... I have to make them on duty and station in barracks every season to avoid having my fortress without any military forces (which went to hunt for their own fun).

do they have any injuries/gray body parts?  They'll stop sparring after getting that and won't ever practice again.  You'd have to make them marksdwarves to get them to shoot at the range.

When this happens, if my soldier in question is not already titled in some sort of weapon, I either put the cripple in the fortress guard or give him a crossbow if he isn't terribly slow as a result of the wound.

They are healthy and fine. And if the dwarf with the crossbow is in the squad I guess he IS a marksdwarf already.
What do you mean by "You'd have to make them marksdwarves" except that?
P.S. I only have this issue in this map, with all buildings above ground. Can the above ground pathfinding cause this?
Also is there a point to place more than 1 archery target in archery range, can it be the reason of this bug?

Did you set patrol points to them sometime in the past, which you later cancelled? I don't know if that would be the cause, but I've been having trouble with all my military dwarves except for the leader patrolling constantly around the edge of the map, which shows a slight resemblance to a patrol I set a long time ago. I believe I read this was a known bug.

The only way I managed to stop this happening was to split the squad up into squads of one dwarf each and station them individually. I haven't tried regrouping them into a single squad to see what happens yet.

[m][w] -> assign to use crossbow.
A marksdwarf holding a sword is still a swordsdwarf, even if his profession title says otherwise.

Yes I had. I deleted them though... Maybe there's some bug with "lost patrol reminiscence"?  :)

Uh-oh. Yes, maybe. My dwarves were above ground when they had the problem, too.

I don't know for sure, but I'm guessing the following bugs might have something to do with it:

quote:
000120 □ [dwarf mode][military]   soldiers follow their old patrol patterns after being reassigned sometimes, related to Bug300

000300 ▣ (Root Cause: Bug120) [dwarf mode][military]   soldier walks over and stands at a location upon being activated and ignores orders to change position

Also I figured out that the marksdwarfs' problem appears only when I have more than 1 archery target per archery range...

Do you mean placing four and designating only one as a room?
In which case:
Well duh.  You need to designate each one individualy as a room with a firing direction.

I was having the identical problem and the identical fix worked.

And no, it doesn't matter if I designate everyone of them as archery ranges, if they are 'inside' each other's range then they don't work.

So to reiterate, for the archery ranges to work, they have to have 1 archery target in each range.

I *think* they worked being overlapped the first time they were used, but now I can't get them to work even if I scrap them all and build new ones - unless there is no overlap of more than one target per range.

...I've never had a problem with a long row of archery targets each designated as their own range...

I also see this in my most recent fort.  Took me a while to figure out why my marksdwarves weren't training much.  They would occasionally fire off a stack at one of the many targets, but rarely, and never two at a time.

Booted up 38c just now and watched two dwarves use "nearby" archery targets (one of the targets ranges overlaps the other--I created a two-distance range with 4 targets, two on one side of stairs, the other two on the other side).

I've seen this too, but they were sleeping in my outside meeting area, despite having plenty of beds. Fiddling with the on/off duty and sleep settings seems to have fixed it.
