Im afraid to exit out my DF game, because whenever I do, it deletes the world.
Help...?

Hit escape, then save game.  This takes you back to the main menu.  If doing this fails, then you need to explain your situation more.

I have tried that on many other worlds.
It fails.
As soon as I press that X, its gone.

What X?  You don't X out of DF.  You first hit escape.  Then you hit Save Game (or Abandon Fortress if you're so inclined).  Then once you're in the main menu, you go down to Quit and it closes itself.  On every system I've played DF on (not that many, granted) you can't X out.  Clicking it does nothing.  You can open the task manager and kill the process, and the hard shutdown will prevent saving, but that's the only other way to do it.

Clicking the X brings up the same menu as pressing Escape.

Saving usually takes a really long time, just make sure you're at the main menu before you exit out.

I have tried saving, and i mistook the X for the quit option.
Believe me, the last thing im doing is closing the game I have up right now.
By the way, does it change something if your playing right out of the Winrar?

It's generally a bad idea to use any file while it's zipped. It's like trying to eat a sandwich out of the plastic and hoping it goes into your stomach.

Well, how do I un-zip?

Just drag the files out, or unzip it. There should be an option to do the latter on whatever program you're using, and the former should just require a simple drag.

Smaller worlds save faster (I gave up on large/huge and now only worldgen small for dwarf fortress mode).

Wow, thats... playing DF from the zip.  I don't even.
