Damn you, elusive currency!
« on: April 21, 2011, 06:06:19 pm »

So. I have begun a new game with a human peasant, and I'm reasonably worried about his welfare. I killed a badger and a chimpanzee, butchered them and sold the meat to some trader in a town so I could buy some cheap armor and begin training with more confidence. Problem is, nobody seems to accept my money. I have tried buying just about everything, even the cheapest things, and they keep saying that maybe, if I "throw in some more goods", he could make an offer. Seriously? A simple llama wool rope costs more than 34 dwarfbucks? Am I reading the prizes wrong?

The number next to each item is the weight, not the price.

I see. So we have to try and miss the prize? It's not like when I am selling and the trader puts a prize after I grossly exaggerate the value of my things, that's for sure. Fucker scammed me 300 bucks for a giraffe skirt.

for buying, offer 1 dwarfbuck and he'll round it up to the lowest he'll sell it for, I believe.

Oh, by the way, new problem. Long story short, I stole like a real fortune from a country, and promptly fled to another with a lot of armor and cash. Problem is, I'm trying to use my stolen money in the new country and it's like it doesn't exist, I can't offer one single penny for an item. Is it because it's stolen, is it because it's from another country, what?

The latter. Money is only good in the civilization it was minted in. You could keep the coins and look at the cool engravings though. Coin engravings are awesome. Then throw the coins at people.

It was this one. I can "sell" my currency and change it for the right equivalent. Throwing coins at people it's always good, of course. Trying to hit with them like you would with a hammer is not. It has passed through (?) everytime I've tried.

Technically it's possible for different races to place different values on currency.  I, myself, have modded an extensive currenct system for dwarves, with coins ranging from iron (1*) to adamantine (5000*).  And a different one for humans, much simpler and based on the noble metals (Copper-1, Silver-10, Gold-100, Platinum-1000)

But in the vanilla game, all coins are worth the same in every race.  Which means they can be bought and sold for their nomative values like Patamago is talking about.

Mind sharing the how of your mod for the additional denominations? It would be nice to consolidate coins without having to hunt endlessly for gems.
