Enemy units standing like lemons
« on: December 27, 2006, 09:42:00 pm »

Just a wierd case I noticed. I lured the human ruler squad into my fortress by putting down my bridge and waited for an idiot dwarf to try to come outdoors like they're expressly forbidden to do. They started stalking in...and I brought up the bridge when I judged that about half would be within to be slaughtered by weapon traps.

It worked, the squad outside started to run away. But the survivors INSIDE when the bridge raised stopped moving. In fact, a Mace Lord spotted them there and decided they would be nice targets for the end of his bronze mace. No signs of struggle were to be had; he hit them dead or flying (including one completely over the raised bridge and the moat!).

I think it's due to the fleeing pathfinding. If an enemy squad can't find it's way to the edge of the map, it will sit there, invisibly flashing their red question mark like Cannot Find Path dwarves would.

I noticed similar behavior with one of the goblin sieges I had.  I lined up 3 or 4 marks dwarves along the fortifications near the forts front door and ordered everybody inside.  Of course, one of the nobles was hanging around outside, just watching the invaders roll up.  Once they started shooting at him and a couple of spear goblins started chasing him, he decided to hightail it inside.

Once he was in I locked the front doors.  But when I did that, the goblins pretty much quit moving and all but one of my marksdwarves quit shooting.  After that one had killed or severely wounded half a dozen goblins, they started to slowly retreat.  At that point I unlocked the doors and the goblins all sped up, my marksdwarves started firing, etc.

So ya, cutting your fortress off from the outside world seems to put a real damper on the festivities.

Careful, thats only true if they dont have any doorknockers, creatures that can smash open doors, with them. If they have any trolls, titans, dragons, or whatever with them, then they can pathfind THRU doors! I'm not sure if thats true of raised bridges tho. But with normal doors, they will head for the doors and try to smash them down, so the rest can get in.

But yea, if they dont have creatures like that with them, then just locking the doors will keep them out. But they might just stand around outside forever, waiting for you to open the doors again. And while they are there, forget getting any trade or migrants. Even if they show up, they'd be slaughtered.

Yeah, eventually they'll go insane, I think.  All they are thinking about is leaving.  I'm not going to worry about it until I add more siege options during rewall.
